When you picture your wedding reception, what do you see? If candlelight, intimate conversations, and a meal you’ll actually remember are part of that vision, our space at The Mouzon House might be exactly what you’re looking for. We’re a Victorian home from 1883 in Saratoga Springs, and we’ve built our approach around celebrations that feel personal, not produced.
What Makes Candlelight Work in Our Spaces
We include candles as part of your booking. House linens, candles, and décor come standard when you reserve space with us. You’re not bringing in rental companies or coordinating drop-offs.
The candlelight works because our spaces are designed for it. Our rooftop terrace holds up to 50 guests, and the wraparound porch seats up to 60. These aren’t ballrooms with 20-foot ceilings where candlelight disappears. The warmth from the flames creates the ambiance you’re after instead of getting lost in a cavernous room. Your guests actually feel the glow.
If our gardens are blooming during your event, we’ll bring in seasonal flowers to complement the candlelit tables. The Victorian architecture adds another layer. Original details from 1883 catch the light differently than modern construction. Crown molding, original woodwork, and restored fixtures create depth that flat walls can’t match.
Why Size Matters for Candlelit Receptions
We specialize in events for up to 120 guests across the full house. The rooftop holds 50, and the porch seats 60. When you’re planning a candlelit reception, these numbers matter more than you might think.
At 50 to 60 guests, candlelight reaches everyone. Nobody’s sitting in a dark corner wondering if they’re part of the celebration. The flames illuminate faces during toasts. You can see your grandmother’s expression when your father gives his speech. Your college roommate’s laugh during the best man’s story registers across the room without amplification.
Compare that to a space built for 300. You’d need dozens of candles just to light the space adequately, and even then, guests at the back tables exist in shadows. The intimacy you’re after gets diluted by square footage.
The Food That Pairs With Candlelit Evenings
Gomez Veggie Ville has been growing pesticide-free vegetables for us for over a decade. SapBush Hollow Farm supplies pasture-raised organic chicken, pork, beef, and lamb for more than 20 years. We build menus around what’s actually ready at these farms, not what’s sitting in a freezer.
For plated dinners, each guest selects from four entrées in advance. Appetizers might include crawfish beignets, burrata with seasonal vegetables, or gumbo. Salads range from poached pear with blue cheese to roasted beets with pecans and feta. Entrées include salmon over risotto, sliced steak with frites, lemon chicken with roasted potatoes, Moroccan eggplant, or blackened catfish with collards.
Bar Service by Candlelight
We offer four bar packages. The Classic covers wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages. The Signature adds standard cocktails. The Custom includes cocktails tailored to your taste. Our Mocktail package offers handcrafted non-alcoholic beverages and seasonal house-made cocktails.
Bar ingredients come from local distillers and breweries like Method Spirits, Albany Distilling Co., Springbrook Hollow Farm Distillery, and Frog Alley Brewing Co. Dinner events run up to five hours, giving you time for cocktails, a seated meal, toasts, cake, and lingering by candlelight.
What’s Included Beyond the Candles
We provide event planning and organization, printed menus, and all the linens and décor. You won’t need to hire a separate coordinator. Server and bartender fees depend on which package you choose. Gratuity isn’t required. You’ll confirm your final menu selections and guest count seven days before your event.
If you want both a candlelit ceremony and reception, we can set up for your ceremony with our in-house chairs and benches, then transition the space for dinner. Setup and breakdown are included.
